I wouldn’t consider myself to be an environmentalist and extremely “green” person, but lately I have started to make small changes in my every day routines in order to be more environmentally conscious. For example, we have started using canvas bags for our grocery store trips and religiously recycling the plastic bags that we do use by bringing them back to the grocery store. Earlier today I walked into a local retail store here in La Jolla, Lululemon, and they were giving away a free workout head band if you wrote down something you were going to do today for Earth Day to be green. Walking home inspired, I started thinking about all the little things that we have started doing lately that don’t take much effort but do make an impact on our environment.
Have you ever heard of Happy Sacks? They are a fabulous invention. They are reusable sandwich bags. They come in various sizes and they can be washed by hand, in the dishwasher or in the washing machine. That’s a few less plastic sandwich bags going to our landfills thanks to Happy Sacks.

Use less plastic with reusable water bottles
Another great product is Klean Kanteen. It is a reusable stainless steel water bottle. I use it every day and the water always tastes clean and stays cold. It not only helps me keep track of the 8 glasses of water I try to get in each day, it also means I don’t spend money on bottled water for my trips to the gym or just around town. Thanks to companies like Klean Kanteen, there are less plastic bottles going to our landfills.
There are so many little things that we all can do in our everyday lives to use less and save more. What will you do today? Here are a few more ideas:
- Turn off the lights when you leave the room
- Take your plastic bags back to your grocer to be recycled
- Use a canvas shopping bag
- Recycle your unwanted mail, don’t throw it away!
- Turn off the water while you brush your teeth or are washing dishes
- Ride your bike or walk whenever it is an option
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Use a reusable water bottle
- Recycle boxes, cans, plastic items, aluminum etc.
- Plant a tree

Great point…if we all do little things, we can make a difference. You forgot to mention the plastic bags that get reused instead of recycled…thanks Hayley.
I had never heard of happysacks before. Once we get settled, I’m going to get one for sure. What a great invention! And they’re cute!
